The Brazilian government approved a 50% tax increase on online casinos.
The Brazilian Ministry of Finance has published a new temporary measure to increase the tax rate on online betting from gross gaming revenue (GGR) by 50%. Previously, it was 12%, but recently it became 18%.
This is because the Brazilian government is looking for alternative ways to stimulate the country’s economy.
The previously proposed increase in the tax on financial transactions (IOF) was rejected amid fears of a decline in investor trust. So we can call this decision “attempt No. 2.”
The amendments made to Law No. 13,756/2018 indicate that 82% of the revenue will now be allocated to cover the operating and maintenance costs of the operator of fixed-odds lottery bets and other games.
It came into force on June 11, 2025. It is planned to be in effect for 60 days, but there is also the possibility of extending it for another 60 days.
The bill will be considered by the National Congress, and if approved, it will be adopted and turned into law.
Brazilian Vice President and Minister of Development Geraldo Alckmin suggested raising taxes on online casinos: “I like your proposal. Not just the 18% proposed by the government, but 27%. This will help prevent harm to many families and society as a whole.
“The government’s proposal is to raise it to 18%, but we can work with Congress to go even further.”
We have previously written about Brazil’s tightening of its gambling policy.
In particular, advertising for online casinos has been banned in all media and on all channels in the country.
