Google unveils new chip that brings “supercomputer” closer to creation
Google has unveiled a new Willow chip that is capable of solving problems that are available to modern computers billions of times faster, the BBC reports.
It is noted that the new chip takes five minutes to complete such a task. While the best modern computer would do it in ten septillion years (in numbers, it looks like this: 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000).
This chip is the latest development in a field known as quantum computing, which attempts to use the principles of particle physics to create a new type of super-powered computer.
The company hopes that such computers will solve problems in medicine, battery chemistry, and artificial intelligence that are beyond the reach of current computers.
However, this is only one of the steps to creating this PC, albeit a crucial one, as scientists have been working on it for about 30 years. It is noted that the creation of the computer itself will require years of research and billions of dollars of investment. At the same time, experts note that after such a breakthrough, the creation of a supercomputer is only a matter of time.
