How to become a billionaire thanks to one toy: Labubu case study

What is Labubu? How did it happen that a seemingly ordinary toy could take over the world? Why do millions of women (and not only) want a fluffy monster Labubu in their collection?

Today we’re going to talk not just about a toy, but about a brilliant marketing ploy that has made Pop Mart billions.

What is Labubu?

Labubu is a toy monster created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung. Originally, this furry was a comic book character, but Kasing Lung did not stop at book illustrations. He started working with Pop Mart, a company that became famous for its surprise toys.

What is labubu

Why did Labubu become popular?

Controversial design

We can immediately mention the interesting design of the toy, which combines the words “scary” and “cute”. Some people think that everything is obvious and not worth buying, while others are even more interested in this offer.

The power of influencers

However, the main wave of excitement started in Korea. As you know, there are a lot of loyal fans of K-pop bands nowadays. One day, Lisa, a member of Blackpink, appeared in public with this toy on her bag. The idol’s fans immediately noticed the monster and wanted one for themselves. The power is in the influencers. As soon as one of them shows the world something new, even if it’s stupid, everyone will run to buy it.

That’s how one band member’s appearance turned the fate of Pop Mart 180 degrees.

Special presentation

As we said, Pop Mart became famous for creating surprise toys.

It’s exactly the same with Labubu. This is not a case where you pay a lot of money and choose the toy you want. This is buying a pig in a poke. There are limited edition figures, collectible figures, and regular ones. There are those that you like more and those that do not evoke positive emotions at all.

When a person buys a Labubu, he or she is nervous and wondering what will be sent to them. It’s a lot of emotions, excitement, and intrigue.

A fan receives a unique figure, explodes with joy and automatically wants to order more, more and more.

Then most of them turn into big collectors who can’t stop themselves from buying fluffy toothy monsters.

Why labubu became popular

How much does Labubu cost?

Depending on its popularity, the price of the toy varied greatly.

It is known that in the UK it costs from £13 to £50 (1£ ≈ 55.8 UAH). Rare figures are sold at various auctions for hundreds of pounds.

In Ukraine, such an original accessory can cost 10,000 UAH.

It is reported online that Labubu brought its developer $1.6 billion in a very short time.

How do you know if Labubu is original?

Expensive and popular products will always be counterfeited.

Since this is not a cheap pleasure, we suggest you take a closer look at how to understand if your Labubu monster is not a fake.

Original toys:

  • They have 9 teeth.
  • Only their head spins, and their paws do not.
  • If you shine a UV light on one of the legs, you will see the Labubu emblem. The other leg is engraved with Pop Mart and Kasing Lung.
  • The toy has two labels on which you will find a QR code to go to the website.
  • The lint is soft and even, not piled up in patches.
  • Each original box has a QR code. You scan it and go to the official website. Then you erase a certain layer of this QR code, under which a combination of 4 digits is hidden. Enter them on the website and you should see that the toy is original and no one has activated this code before you.

Instead of conclusions

It should be noted that the Labubu toy itself is not something new or exclusive. The company has been selling them for quite some time. However, they have gained fame only now – thanks to several successful appearances among the stars. That’s how a few good photos can make you a billionaire.
