$1 billion in a single day: How GTA 6 can impact the U.S. economy

The release of one of the most anticipated games in the world could have a negative impact on the U.S. economy.

GTA 6

The release of GTA 6 could potentially cost the U.S. economy more than $1 billion in a single day. This isn’t about direct financial losses, but rather a possible drop in employee productivity due to widespread use of vacation days and absenteeism driven by interest in the new game.

The game’s release is scheduled for November 19, 2026 (Thursday). The fact that the release falls in the middle of the workweek could create additional problems for employers: some employees may take the day off, arrive late to work, or not show up for their shift at all in order to spend the day in Vice City.

Gaming and economic media estimate that the drop in productivity could reach about 2%. Industries with a high proportion of young workers may be the most vulnerable—this demographic is one of the franchise’s key target audiences.

Researcher José Montalvo of Pompeu Fabra University notes that the launch of such a highly anticipated game could potentially cause a significant number of people to miss a day of work.

However, $1 billion is not an official U.S. government forecast, nor is it a guaranteed economic loss. It is an estimate of the potential cost of lost productivity, as reported by the media.

But for Rockstar Games, this is nothing but a plus. Anticipation surrounding GTA 6 has already reached massive proportions, and analysts are predicting tens of millions of copies sold.

The previous installment in the series demonstrated just how profitable a GTA launch can be. GTA V earned over $1 billion in just the first three days of sales, setting one of the most spectacular records in the history of the gaming industry.

GTA 6 release

Thus, GTA 6 could become a rare example of how a video game release can influence economic activity far beyond the gaming market. And while Rockstar prepares to count its profits, American employers may have to account for those who decide to take a “day off for Vice City.”
