OpenAI has released GPT-5: developers claim it has reached the level of a PhD
OpenAI has unveiled the long-awaited version of ChatGPT — GPT-5.
They claim that the updated chatbot can provide expert knowledge at the level of a PhD.
OpenAI co-founder and CEO Sam Altman called this model “the beginning of a new era for ChatGPT.”
“I think that something like GPT-5 would have been practically unthinkable at any previous period in human history,” he said ahead of Thursday’s launch.
What can GPT-5 do?
OpenAI claims that GPT-5 is capable of creating software in its entirety and providing more accurate and logical answers. It now feels “more human.”
Altman said:
“GPT-3 seemed to me like talking to a high school student… 4 seemed like talking to a college student… GPT-5 is the first time it really feels like you’re talking to an expert on any topic, like a PhD-level expert.”
Experts and professors have already commented on the new GPT-5. Opinions differ, and there are many doubts about the “professionalism” of this model’s thinking. So only time will tell how top-notch it can be considered.
The company’s blog states:
“Artificial intelligence may seem more responsive and personal than previous technologies, especially for vulnerable individuals experiencing mental or emotional distress.”
However, the company has stated that it will not provide definitive answers to questions such as “Should I break up with my boyfriend?”
Instead, it will “help you think it through — asking different questions and weighing the pros and cons.”
In May, OpenAI withdrew a heavily criticized update that made ChatGPT “too obsequious,” according to Sam Altman.
In a recent episode of OpenAI’s own podcast, Altman said he thinks about how people interact with his products.
“It won’t be all good, there will still be problems,” he said.
“People will develop these somewhat problematic, and perhaps very problematic, parasocial relationships [with AI]. Society will have to develop new protective mechanisms. But the benefits will be enormous.”
