Brazil plans to completely ban sports betting advertising
Brazil is moving toward a complete ban on sports betting and gambling advertising in general.
This proposal has moved forward in the Federal Senate. The bill was approved by the Science and Technology Committee (CCT) and is now awaiting evaluation by the Constitution and Justice Committee (CCJ).
Final approval of the bill could have a negative impact on the financial situation of Brazilian football. The estimated losses that major clubs could incur are approximately 842 million reais.
Most of the deals between giant clubs and bookmakers may require significant changes in strategy or even cancellation.
“Offensive advertising and, above all, advertising carried out by underground companies must be repressed,” says Bernardo Cavalcanti Freire, legal advisor to the Associação Nacional de Jogos e Loterias (ANJL) and partner at Betlaw, a law firm specializing in the gaming industry.
This issue is currently being actively debated. There are many different positions. Some believe that the niche really needs strict regulation, while others believe that it would be disastrous for the financial situation of sports clubs.
Time will tell what the final decision of Brazilian lawmakers will be.
