What has changed in the media buyer hiring market in 2026?

Anyone even remotely involved in the affiliate industry has noticed that the market has undergone a significant transformation over the past two years.

Today, we’re talking about hiring media buyers and how recruiters’ approach to this process has changed. We’ve gotten used to a basic template.

Do you work with Facebook Ads, know how to launch a campaign, and have a few good campaign setups? Welcome!

We all have an imagination about what exactly is valued in media buyers. But if everything were that straightforward and formulaic, this article wouldn’t exist. Standards have changed and will continue to evolve. So let’s not dwell on the introduction – let’s dive in and figure out how to become that one chosen candidate for the media buyer role.

Key aspects a recruiter will definitely pay attention to

So, while in the past a “profitable campaign” case study was a “wow” factor and such a specialist was snapped up by the team – as they say – in a heartbeat, things are more complicated now.

Stop right now and think about exactly who you want to be. There are two options:

Hustler – schemes, shady deals, cash, and cars (but in reality, just empty words that will earn you the infamous nickname “blowhard” among the crowd).

Affiliate marketer – a strategist who doesn’t just launch campaigns based on “secret campaign setups,” but understands the market, analyzes it, knows how to test different hypotheses, and thinks strategically (that’s why we said he’s a strategist). The one who actually gets paid a lot – and the one who doesn’t need to brag about “schemes” everywhere, because everyone already recognizes their top-tier skill level.

Well, that was a moment of humor and, at the same time, bitter truth. So if you suddenly realize you’re the first type – all the more reason to read on and change your career path.

You think, rather than just deliver traffic

As we mentioned above, secret campaign setups won’t impress anyone these days. Even if your main task is to launch campaigns, that doesn’t mean someone else will do all the strategic work for you.

You’ll notice significant changes in your results as soon as you shift from “I know how to run ads” to “I know and understand exactly how ads work.”

Something’s not working? Here, you shouldn’t just throw in another “top-tier campaign setup” from your backpack thinking “maybe it’ll pay off,” but rather analyze every metric and ask yourself, “Why did this happen, and what can I do about it?”

From there, we’ll smoothly move on to testing various hypotheses. There’s no single approach that will always work perfectly. As disappointing as it may sound, you’ll have to come up with something new every time or refine your existing strategy.

Remember, in 2026, a media buyer isn’t just an executor – they’re a problem-solver.

Believe us, recruiters know how to check this out. Often, right from the start, they’ve already assessed you and figured out exactly how you think and what to expect from you.

AI use among core skills

Whereas working with artificial intelligence used to be mentioned in job offers with phrases like “if possible” or something similar, that’s no longer the case.

As you’ve probably noticed, advertising platforms are actively implementing AI and making it the foundation for their algorithms. Facebook is no exception. These aren’t just minor system tweaks – it’s a full-fledged AI era, where many familiar functions have changed beyond recognition.

So, essentially, a media buyer has no choice. They must understand how to work in tandem with AI (without, however, shifting all responsibility for the result onto it) in order to remain competitive.

So, when a recruiter asks about your relationship with artificial intelligence, don’t be quick to say that you’re against it and don’t use it at all in your work.

Lone Wolf vs. Team Player

As it happens, teamwork currently dominates the market, rather than working solo. Recruiters often aren’t just looking for an extra pair of hands to get the job done, but for a team member who will contribute to the team’s growth.

This point touches on several fundamental qualities that are taken into account: adaptability, the ability to communicate effectively, stress resilience, and so on. In short, soft skills carry significant weight.

You can be the best of the best, but if you don’t know how to work in a team, delegate, and generally communicate effectively within the group – it will be difficult.

That’s exactly why recruiters often prefer a beginner over a media buyer with years of experience. And it’s all because the junior simply won out on the “soft skills” criterion.

In summary

In this article, we’ve listed the key areas of the field where the biggest changes have taken place. We could mention countless other aspects, but is there any point if, in the end, the foundation is lost?

So here’s the conclusion. In 2026, it’s time to transition from being a “hustler” to an “affiliate marketer” who truly has something to be proud of. Who you want to be is up to you. But we know for sure that the character named “Strategist” will definitely achieve more.
